SUMMARY:August Artist of the Month Opening Reception - Annie Shaffer
DESCRIPTION:August 2026 Artist of the Month: Annie Shaffer \nExhibit Title: The Ground Between Us \n\nBorn and raised in Michigan\, Annie draws inspiration from its lakes\, forests\, and open skies. Now dividing her time between Ann Arbor and Honolulu\, her practice reflects the contrast of grounded Midwestern landscapes and the luminous energy of the islands. The result is work that is meditative\, transformative\, and visually immersive. \nAnnie’s paintings invite viewers into a contemplative dialogue with both the internal and external worlds\, capturing the essence of landscape rather than its literal form. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and is held in private collections nationwide\, appealing to collectors who seek art that is both visually compelling and spiritually evocative. \nAnnie’s paintings are not meant to simply be seen\, but to be felt. They are portals; abstract landscapes where inner and outer worlds meet\, inviting you to slow down\, breathe\, and connect with something greater than yourself. \nArtist Statement \n\nMy work explores the space between what is seen and felt. \nI seek to capture moments through abstract forms\, layered color\, texture\, and symbolic imagery. I am drawn to the mysteries that connect us through something larger than ourselves. Dreams\, spirits\, the stars\, and Mother Earth all serve as inspiration in my creative process. \nPainting is an act of exploration and discovery; I am interested in the questions that do not have clear answers. My work is not meant to provide certainty but to create space for contemplation\, imagination\, and personal meaning. \nIt is an invitation to stand at the edge of the unknown and embrace the beauty\, mystery\, and possibility found there. \nWebsite: annieshafferart.com

SUMMARY:July Artists of the Month Opening Reception & Gallery Talk - Garin Horner & Christine Reising
DESCRIPTION:5:30-7:00 PM– Opening Reception \nExhibit Title: Two Tarot Visions: Art of Garin Horner & Christine Reising \nAn exhibition of two Tarot card collections\, created in two different processes\, photography and printmaking. \nAbout The Wonder Workers: A Major Arcana Tarot Series \nWonder workers are people who perform miracles or astonishing acts. The Wonder Worker major arcana Tarot cards contain portraits of people who fall into these categories. The cards started as monotype prints that were created on a soft plate with acrylic paints. Each print started with an inkjet transfer using imagery related to the person and concept of the Tarot card. Conceptually\, this series was initiated by the discovery of the French mystic and healer Nizier Anthelme Philippe. I found him\, or perhaps he found me\, while researching a trip to Provence. I discovered that his grave was located in the Loyasse Cemetery in Lyon\, first on my itinerary. Cemeteries are a vital part of travel for me as they are the repositories of the history and culture of a location. After arriving at a series focusing on mystics\, I was then inspired to seek out others from France and eventually broadened my search to include additional countries and periods. \nOf course\, Maitre Philippe became my Magician. \nAbout the Crowley & Waite Victorian Tarot Deck \nIn many ways The Crowley-Waite Victorian Tarot deck is unique among the vast assortment of tarot card decks. Though the deck’s imagery is modeled after the enduring Rider-Waite-Colman-Smith deck\, the pictures on the cards are photorealistic. Some of the photos\, like the Hanged Man\, have also been reimagined to expand their metaphorical and symbolic meanings. The design concept for the card’s imagery is based on vintage cabinet cards\, Victorian era photographs widely produced across the U.S. and Europe. \nThe pictures are a fusion of real vintage cabinet card portraits\, late 19th-century landscape photos\, and the photographic art and design of Garin Horner.  Photoshop is used to stitch the composites together. Note: all sourced photographs are in the public domain and copyright-free. \nIn addition\, the deck features historical figures\, including the namesakes of this deck: the famed occultist Aleister Crowley and the scholarly mystic Arthur Edward Waite. Among the portraits in the major and minor arcana\, Horner highlighted many mystics and occultists\, both real and fabled. Doing so\, he fabricated remarkable photo-realistic imagery that stirs the imagination and awakens a reader’s intuition. \n7:00-8:00 PM – Gallery Talk: The Art of Making Tarot Cards\nThe Art of Making Tarot Cards brings together two distinct artistic voices. Join photographer Garin Horner and printmaker Chris Reising for a rare\, behind-the-scenes look at how tarot decks are conceived\, built\, and brought to life. Come and learn how the artists reimagined tarot traditions through a contemporary lens. From the initial concept to the finished cards\, they’ll unpack the visual decisions\, symbolic frameworks\, and creative risks that shape a working deck. \nThis talk is also a practical guide for creators. Whether you are newly interested in tarot or are an experienced reader\, this conversation is meant to help you visualize what your own deck would look like. Horner and Reising will share real-world methods\, workflows\, and lessons learned from making their own decks. They’ll offer concrete strategies you can use to begin (or refine) your own tarot project. If you’ve ever wondered how to translate ideas into images or turn a personal vision into a cohesive system of symbols\, this talk will give you both direction and inspiration to take the next step.\n\n\nGarin Horner\nGarin Horner is an artist\, author\, and full professor of Art at Adrian College in Adrian\, Michigan. He has been an award-winning photographer for over 30 years. Horner’s work has been exhibited worldwide and is included in the collections of several art museums across the United States. Horner is an authority on pedagogy in photography higher education and has authored three influential books on teaching and learning photography. He is a long-standing member of the Royal Photographic Society in England and the Society for Photographic Education in the U.S. \nChristine Reising\nChristine Reising is a multi-disciplinary artist who has been exhibiting for more than forty years throughout the Midwest and Canada. Her varied art practice includes printmaking\, collage and book arts. She has constructed and designed over 30 of her own books and has collaborated with other artists and writers on theirs. In addition\, for many years Christine created costumes and sets for Ann Arbor theater companies that transitioned into her installation artworks often incorporating books and viewer participation. She received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Printmaking from the University of Windsor in 1980. Professor Emerita Reising taught at Siena Heights University from 1984 until her retirement in 2014. Additional positions that she held during her tenure included Department Chair\, Gallery Director\, and European Study Program Director. \n\nWebsites –\nHorner: heliographispress.com & photoalchemybook.com\nReising: christinereising.weebly.com

SUMMARY:June Artist of the Month Opening Reception - Eric Rentschler
DESCRIPTION:June 2026 Artist of the Month: Eric Rentschler \nExhibit Title: Guardians of the Threshold \n\nEric Rentschler (Dreamwalker Arts) is a Michigan-based multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of sacred symbolism\, mythic archetypes\, and dimensional wood carving. Blending CNC-carved relief\, hand-finishing\, electroformed metalwork\, and ritual aesthetics\, his work explores the threshold between ancient devotion and contemporary embodiment. \nDrawing inspiration from Egyptian and Norse mythology\, animal guardians\, and archetypal forms\, Eric creates pieces that function not merely as decoration but as modern relics.. objects intended to live in meditation spaces\, altars\, and contemplative environments. \nHis practice bridges digital precision with hand refinement\, allowing technology to serve as a tool for sculptural storytelling. Each piece is designed to hold presence.. textured\, dimensional\, and intentional. \nIn addition to gallery work\, Eric exhibits at regional art fairs\, festivals and creates commissioned symbolic works for private collectors. His current focus is building cohesive mythic series that explore the relationship between image\, ritual\, and psychological archetype.

SUMMARY:May Artist of the Month Opening Reception - Mary Lou Wiegand
DESCRIPTION:Crazy Wisdom Art Gallery | May 2026 Artist of the Month – Mary Lou Wiegand \nExhibition Title: Some Wisdom\, Some Fun \nAn artist since early childhood\, Mary Lou Wiegand recalls her first act of creation as a toddler “painting” with her mother’s lipstick on the walls—an early sign of a lifelong instinct for color and form. With constant companions in coloring books and crayons\, and later a formative drawing kit\, she developed an intuitive grasp of anatomy\, foreshortening\, and facial structure. Though encouraged briefly in high school after recognition from an արվեստ program\, she was steered away from pursuing art professionally and spent many years placing it second. Only in the past five to six years has she fully embraced sharing her work\, stepping into exhibitions with both excitement and vulnerability. A member of several art organizations\, including the Brighton Art Guild\, Michigan Watercolor Society\, and Michigan Plein Air Painters\, she continues to refine her practice through weekly study and decades of classes with accomplished artists. \nHer creative process is immersive and meditative—often accompanied by music such as Debussy’s Clair de lune—where she enters a focused\, almost “Zen” state that dissolves time and physical awareness. Working primarily in watercolor and oils\, she is drawn to the luminosity of glazes\, the shifting moods of light\, and the expressive power of color\, proudly identifying herself as a “colorist.” Inspiration comes from both the natural world and human moments: plein air landscapes\, fleeting interactions\, personal memories\, and imagination all find their way into her work. Over a lifetime of creating—now spanning more than seven decades—she has illustrated five children’s books\, painted a large-scale mural\, and exhibited in juried shows such as Tamarack\, “The Best of West Virginia Art.” Her art reflects a deep commitment to beauty\, observation\, and meaning\, with a continuing desire to explore\, express\, and share while time allows.

SUMMARY:April Artist of the Month Opening Reception - Sophia Hanifi
DESCRIPTION:Come and enjoy the original and thought-provoking collage art of local artist Sophia Hanifi. Sophia Hanifi is an artist and educator living in Ann Arbor Michigan. She studied art at the University of Michigan where she received her BA in Fine Arts. \nArtist Statement: \nMy art making with collage reflects my love of surrealism. In my work I use paper doll elements combined with vintage and new papers\, colored pencil and other drawing materials. I enjoy the process collage entails; choosing materials by texture\, color and image and finding combinations that achieve resonance. Many of these pieces explore the theme of feminine agency. By using the juxtaposition of time period\, social status and race I hope to create images that challenge traditional female stereotypes. \nFree drinks and light refreshments \nFor more info on Sophia Hanifi’s check out her website at: \nSophia Hanifi Art

Water carries the weight of\nhistory. \nThe Weight of Water is artist Lila Hudgins’ first solo-exhibition; and an exploration of\nLila’s relationship with her water – the ocean and beaches she grew up on in Panama.\nThrough a range of abstraction\, Lila Hudgins creates paintings soaked with tropicality\nthat pay homage to the spirituality and comfort found in the warm outdoors.\nWithin the exhibition\, Lila has included paintings from her charity collection\, Painting for\nPanama\, meant to raise money for JLM Christian Foundation – a non-profit dedicated to\naiding struggling Panamanians in a variety of ways. These paintings are clearly\nindicated as such\, and all proceeds go to JLM. \nArtists Bio: \nLila Hudgins grew up surfing and painting on the Pacific coast of Panama from the ages of two to eighteen. SUMMARY:Art Gallery January Artist Opening Reception- Lauren Kingsley
DESCRIPTION:Come and view the beautiful country scenic oil paintings of Lauren Kingsley.  On view upstairs in the Crazy Wisdom Art Gallery for the month of January. \nArtists bio: \nLauren started painting in the basement when she was around 8 years old because someone gave her a set or two of paint-by-numbers projects.  Sometime after that she grew up and really didn’t start to paint until college (Connecticut College\, New London\, CT). She studied under Barkley Hendricks\, and a couple of other people who were wonderful but she can’t remember their names. She also attended the Art Students League of New York for a couple of drawing classes\, and Parsons School of Design for color theory. In the mid-to early 1980s she purchased a Julian half-box plein air easel from Pearl Paint and set it up in her tiny-ass little studio apartment over on east 92nd Street and painted from photographs\, none of which she can remember except one\, a portrait of her holding an infant boy. \nThe plein air box got its outdoor education in Westchester County\, NY\, the Catskills\, Cape Cod\, Connecticut\, Massachusetts and by the late 80s she had sold a few works and been a participant in several regional shows. She got a studio in a loft in Peekskill\, NY and was able to make bigger messes there. \nIn 1990 she moved to London for some job but didn’t bring along her plein air stuff until around 1991. There’s a fuzzy period in here but one highlight was the 5-week solo auto trip around Wales\, The Lake District and Scotland strictly to paint landscape. It was kind of wonderful. \nShe continued to paint while living in Somers\, NY and in 1994 moved to study Creative Writing at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. \nWebsite: Lauren Kingsley – Portfolio of Works \nFree Opening reception with Light snacks and refreshments!

SUMMARY:Art Gallery Artist Opening Reception - Debra Golden
DESCRIPTION:Debra Jean-Smith Golden graduated with a BFA from UM Stamps School of Art & Design\, and MFA Eastern Michigan University. She teaches watercolor and assorted classes for Washtenaw Community College in Community Enrichment\, and at Senior Centers. She also teaches Art Education for non-majors at Eastern Michigan University. \nArtist Statement: Teaching inspires new ideas for me and results in ever so many demos that have developed into some works in this show. I like to explore themes such as messages\, mandalas\, astrology & constellations\, special people (those Women from Michigan)\, environmental concerns\, and the illusion & passages of time. \nMany of these works were inspired by a Mandala group on Facebook\, where I was challenged to paint one a day for the first twelve days of the year. Using the symbolism of the full moons\, patterns in nature\, and how I looked at the meaning of numbers themselves (numerology)\, my spin takes them away from a strictly repeated pattern to explore something more. \nOther works in this exhibit were inspired by the solstices\, the moon becomes a character\, and the space has a touch of magic in which I enjoy moving beyond realism into another way of seeing and communicating. I hope you discover something new to you in these works. \nWebsite: debragoldenart.weebly.com \nFacebook: Debra J Golden Artworks

SUMMARY:Holly Bulko Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Holly Bulko has been reverse paining on glass since April 2022.  She paints backward with the details first\, reverse painting on glass farmhouse windows. This gives the art two different looks light or dark\, resembling stained glass.  Each painting is very personal like a journal\, with stories behind both the frames and the scenes.\n\nArtists Statement: Painting has helped me heal\, as well as bringing joy to others\, I want my artwork to invoke something that stirs the soul. My experience inspires me to trust the twist and turns of life\, and hope you enjoy and embrace your continuing journey as much as I have mine.
